The new Focus will be standardized around the world no small feat for a car that will be sold in more than 120 countries. Eager to slide behind the wheel but unable to report yet on the U.S. Focus check back next weekwe figured the European car would be a good stand-in.

2011 Ford Vertrek concept

| 2011 Ford Vertrek concept |
Ford Vertrek is Afrikaans for “departure,” a more-relaxed synonym for “escape.” The styling is certainly a departure from that of the current Escape, and that’s a welcome change; the company’s small SUV has not been completely redone since its introduction way back in 2001. We took a liking to the Escape when it initially bowed, but—particularly in a category that has undergone such explosive growth in the last decade—it feels extremely old today. In its last comparison test, the little guy only managed a seventh-place finish out of nine. Clearly, a departure of some sort is needed.
